Both procedures use a flexible camera on a tube — but they look at completely different parts of your digestive tract and are used for different symptoms. Understanding the difference helps you ask the right questions when your doctor recommends one (or both).
What is an Upper GI Endoscopy (OGD)?
OGD stands for Oesophago-Gastro-Duodenoscopy. A flexible scope is passed through your mouth, down your esophagus, into your stomach, and into the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). It takes 15–20 minutes.
An OGD is used to investigate:
- Heartburn and GERD
- Difficulty swallowing
- Upper abdominal pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Blood in vomit or black stools
- H. pylori infection
- Peptic ulcers
- Barrett's esophagus surveillance
- Stomach cancer screening
What is a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy passes a longer, flexible scope through your rectum and visualises the entire large bowel — the sigmoid colon, descending colon, transverse colon, ascending colon, and cecum (often including the terminal ileum). It takes 20–40 minutes.
A colonoscopy is used to investigate:
- Blood in stool (bright red)
- Chronic diarrhoea or constipation
- Colon cancer screening (age 45+)
- Polyp detection and removal
- Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's, UC)
- Unexplained iron-deficiency anaemia
- Family history of colorectal cancer

Preparation Differences
For OGD:
The preparation is simple: nothing to eat or drink for 6–8 hours before the procedure. If scheduled in the morning, fast from midnight. You will receive a local anaesthetic throat spray to numb the gag reflex. Sedation is optional.
For Colonoscopy:
The preparation is more involved:
- 2 days before: Low-fibre diet — no seeds, raw vegetables, or whole grains.
- Evening before: Bowel prep laxative (1–1.5 L of solution). Expect 4–6 hours of bowel movements until the stool runs clear.
- Morning of: Nothing to eat or drink from midnight.
- At hospital: IV line, sedation, procedure, 30–45 min recovery room.

Yes — and it's often the best option when symptoms could point to either upper or lower GI issues, or when anaemia or weight loss needs a complete GI evaluation. At Dhaara Hospital, we routinely perform combined OGD + colonoscopy in a single session:
- OGD first (15 min), then colonoscopy (20–40 min)
- Single bowel prep and single sedation session
- Cost: ₹6,500–11,000 — significantly less than booking separately
- One report, one follow-up consultation
