What is an Endoscopy?

An upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopy — also called a gastroscopy — is a diagnostic procedure where a thin, flexible tube fitted with a high-definition camera (endoscope) is gently passed through your mouth into the oesophagus, stomach and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). The entire procedure takes only 15 to 20 minutes and causes minimal discomfort, especially when done under light sedation.

1. Pre-procedure preparation: You will be asked to fast for 6 hours before the procedure. Our nursing team will review your medications and medical history.
2. Sedation: Light IV sedation is administered so you feel relaxed and comfortable throughout. Most patients have no memory of the procedure.
3. The procedure: The endoscope is gently passed through your mouth. You breathe normally throughout. The camera transmits real-time video to a monitor where Dr. Bojanapu examines your digestive lining in detail.
4. Biopsy if needed: If any suspicious area is found, a tiny tissue sample (biopsy) can be taken painlessly through the endoscope for laboratory testing.
5. Recovery: You rest for 30 minutes in our recovery area while the sedation wears off. Most patients feel normal within an hour.
6. Results: Preliminary findings are shared the same day. Biopsy results are typically available within 5–7 days.

Is Endoscopy Painful?

Many patients are anxious about endoscopy, but with modern sedation techniques, the procedure is virtually painless.
