What is a Hernia?

A hernia occurs when an internal organ — most commonly part of the intestine — pushes through a weak spot or gap in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. This creates a visible and sometimes painful bulge. Hernias do not heal on their own and typically require surgical repair to prevent serious complications like strangulation (when the blood supply to the trapped tissue is cut off).

Types of Hernia Treated at Dhaara Hospital

Inguinal Hernia

Most common type — a bulge in the groin area. More common in men. The intestine or fatty tissue pushes through the inguinal canal.

Umbilical Hernia

A bulge at or near the belly button. Common in infants and overweight adults. Can enlarge progressively if untreated.

Incisional Hernia

Occurs through a scar from a previous abdominal surgery. Can develop months to years after the original operation.

Femoral Hernia

A bulge in the upper inner thigh. More common in women. Higher risk of strangulation compared to inguinal hernias.

Hiatal Hernia

Part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. Often causes severe GERD and acid reflux symptoms.

Epigastric Hernia

A bulge between the belly button and the breastbone. Usually small but can cause discomfort and requires repair.

Symptoms of Hernia

  • A visible bulge or lump in the abdomen, groin or thigh — especially when standing or straining
  • Dull ache or discomfort at the site — worsens with bending, coughing or lifting
  • Feeling of heaviness or pressure at the hernia site
  • Bulge that can be pushed back (reducible) or cannot be pushed back (non-reducible/incarcerated)
  • In strangulated hernia: sudden severe pain, nausea, vomiting — requires emergency surgery

Laparoscopic Hernia Repair: How it Works

At Dhaara Hospital, Dr. Srinivas Bojanapu performs laparoscopic hernia repair using the most advanced techniques:

  • TEP (Totally Extra-Peritoneal Repair): The hernia is repaired without entering the abdominal cavity. A mesh is placed to strengthen the weakened area. Gold standard for inguinal hernia repair with the lowest recurrence rate.
  • TAPP (Trans-Abdominal Pre-Peritoneal Repair): Performed through the abdominal cavity — preferred for bilateral hernias, incarcerated hernias, or when the anatomy is complex.
  • IPOM (Intraperitoneal Onlay Mesh): Used for incisional and ventral hernias — the mesh is placed inside the abdominal cavity directly over the defect.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hernia Surgery

When does a hernia need surgery?
Not all hernias need immediate surgery, but most will eventually need repair. Hernias that are symptomatic (causing pain), enlarging, irreducible (cannot be pushed back) or showing signs of strangulation (severe pain, nausea, inability to push back) need prompt surgical repair. Your surgeon will advise you on timing.
Will the hernia come back after surgery?
With modern mesh-based laparoscopic repair, the recurrence rate is less than 1%. Following post-operative instructions — especially avoiding heavy lifting for 6 weeks and maintaining a healthy weight — further reduces the risk of recurrence.
What is the mesh used in hernia surgery?
A surgical mesh is a thin, flexible net made of synthetic material (polypropylene) or biological tissue. It is placed over the hernia defect to reinforce the weakened area. Modern meshes are well-tolerated and permanent, with very low rates of complications.
Can I exercise after hernia surgery?
Light walking is encouraged from day 2 after surgery. Desk work can resume in 3–5 days. Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise and activities that increase abdominal pressure for at least 4–6 weeks after surgery.
