Description

Gallbladder surgery addresses conditions specific to the gallbladder, including gallstones, inflammation, and other disorders, through surgical interventions aimed at restoring digestive health.

Understanding Gallbladder Surgery

Gallbladder surgery, or cholecystectomy, is a medical procedure performed to remove the gallbladder, a small organ located beneath the liver. This surgery is typically recommended to treat conditions such as gallstones, inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis), or other gallbladder-related disorders.

Gallstones are hardened deposits that form in the gallbladder and can cause symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and jaundice. If left untreated, gallstones can lead to complications such as inflammation or infection of the gallbladder, bile duct blockage, or pancreatitis.

During gallbladder surgery, the surgeon may perform either a laparoscopic cholecystectomy or an open cholecystectomy, depending on the patient's condition and medical history. In a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, small incisions are made in the abdomen, and a laparoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera) and surgical instruments are inserted to remove the gallbladder. This minimally invasive approach typically results in less pain, shorter recovery time, and smaller scars compared to open surgery.

In an open cholecystectomy, a larger incision is made in the abdomen to directly access and remove the gallbladder. This approach may be necessary if the gallbladder is severely inflamed or if there are complications during the laparoscopic procedure.

After gallbladder surgery, patients may experience temporary discomfort, bloating, or changes in bowel habits. However, most individuals recover well and can resume their normal activities within a few days to weeks, depending on the type of surgery performed and their overall health.

Types of Gallbladder Surgery:

The most common gallbladder surgery is laparoscopic cholecystectomy, involving small incisions for a camera and tools to remove the gallbladder.

Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Open cholecystectomy involves a larger abdominal incision to remove the gallbladder, used when laparoscopic surgery is infeasible due to complications.

Open Cholecystectomy

Similar to laparoscopic cholecystectomy, but performed through a single incision, usually at the navel.

Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS)
