Description

Gastrectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the partial or total removal of the stomach. It is commonly performed to treat conditions such as stomach cancer, severe ulcers, perforations, or other diseases affecting the stomach that cannot be managed effectively with non-surgical treatments.

Understanding of Gastrectomy

During a gastrectomy, the surgeon carefully removes the diseased portion of the stomach while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. The extent of the removal depends on the specific condition being treated and its severity. In some cases, only a portion of the stomach may need to be removed (partial gastrectomy), while in others, the entire stomach may be removed (total gastrectomy). After removing the affected portion of the stomach, the surgeon may reconstruct the digestive tract to maintain continuity and allow food to pass from the esophagus to the small intestine. This can involve reconnecting the remaining portion of the stomach to the small intestine or using a segment of the intestine to create a new passage for food (esophagojejunostomy or gastrojejunostomy).

In some cases, a second gastrectomy may be necessary if the initial surgery was not successful or if complications arise. Revisional gastrectomy aims to address issues such as recurrent cancer, complications from previous surgery, or inadequate weight loss after bariatric gastrectomy procedures.

Revisional Gastrectomy

Also known as gastric sleeve surgery, this procedure involves removing a large portion of the stomach to create a smaller, sleeve-shaped stomach. It is commonly used as a weight loss surgery option for individuals with severe obesity.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

Open gastrectomy involves a single large abdominal incision and is chosen for complex cases or when laparoscopic surgery is unsuitable due to factors like tumor size or patient health.

Open Gastrectomy

This procedure involves the removal of part of the stomach, usually the lower portion (antrum) or the upper portion (fundus). Subtotal gastrectomy may be performed to treat certain types of cancer or ulcers that affect specific areas of the stomach.

Subtotal Gastrectomy

In this procedure, only a portion of the stomach is removed while preserving the rest. Partial gastrectomy is often performed to treat localized stomach cancer or benign tumors.
